Review by TD Derek Robins
The 7th Quarry
Park Open was a
great weekend of disc golf enjoyed
by 42 players. It was especially nice to see new players, and many
of the newcomers did exceptionally well on their debut. Bruce Webber
(who plays Ultimate for Point Blank) made the Amateur final and finished
4th in that division, meanwhile Carl took the prize for longest drive.
The Amateur
final was closely contested with Steve "Weatherman" Jones taking a
narrow lead into the final 6 holes. He was overhauled at the end by
teenager Ben Foxall who had travelled all the way down from Fife,
Scotland to play.
In the
Open division it looked like Derek Robins had his 7th successive title
in the bag after 3 rounds when he was 10 shots ahead of the pack.
However, a disastrous 4th round 42 for him, coupled with a sizzling
35 by Oz Freire (including an ace) saw the lead reduced to 3. The
final saw little movement in the top group, with Del and Oz taking
1st and 2nd. Visiting american HB Clark overtook Ivan Bromage to take
3rd spot.
Prizes of
golf discs, wine and chocolate were awarded for top 3 amateurs and
pros, as well as for:
Longest Putt -Tom Soper on both days
Closest to Pin - Del Robins
Longest drive - Carl
First disc
lost in the Avon - Dan Massey.
The Womens
division was won by Sue Underwood.
As highest
placed newcomer Bruce Webber won BDGA membership.
The barbeque
in the evening went down very well and those with energy left threw
an Ultrastar (and themselves!!) around and played night golf with
flash guns to charge the discs. The rest of us kept warm around a
bonfire and witnessed the ritual sacrifice of a virgin golf disc.
It was all good fun, thanks to everyone for coming and especially
to Hannah for getting all the food.
