12
pairs converged on Oxford for this year's BGGA doubles event, and they
were rewarded by missing most of the predicted rain. It was the first
tour event at Oxford's two interlinked courses, the South Park 15
and the Headington Hill 9. Most players enjoyed the latter course
more, mainly for its natural beauty and seclusion.
The Saturday was played to the 'Champion's League' format and strangely
there were no upsets to the seeding all day. Neal
Pickett and Miles Clarke, trading as The Sultans of Sleaze, kept Ivan
Bromage and Sue Underwood at bay to secure top spot in their group and
later completed a double over them in the 3rd place play-off. The Bushwhackers
(Bud & Tom Soper) managed to hold off a late rally by The Flash Gordons
(Rich Sampson & Spencer Worth), earning themselves an all-Acers semi-final
date with The Sultans.
Thick
as Thieves, Ruth Steele and Rob Capper(the BDGA's new, friendly treasurer
with the smile to pocket a thousand subs), were unlucky to leave Saturday
without a win, but made up for it the next day with a final match
defeat of Fat Stuff to pull themselves into 7th position. Robin Ailes
and Matt Pike were potential dark horses, but conceded 5th spot to
the Flash Gordans.
Picking up the rear were the F.A.N.S. (Frank Knutton and Nicky Young)
and Sideshow Bob - Giles and George. This was the Sideshow Bob's first
disc golf outing as the duo are more commonly seen on the Ultimate
circuit playing for the Oxford Sharks. The newcomers made a great
impression on the other players and
were runners up in the the Spirit of the Game vote. The eventual winners
of this respected accolade were the Flash Gordans (Richard Sampson,
Spencer Worth) earning themselves 2 bottles of fine wine. Nick Young
of F.A.N.S. won BDGA membership as the top performing amateur.
Who
does that leave but the eventual winners, The Deltones, whose pre-eminence
albeit in a reduced top-end was such that they didn't lose a hole
on the Sunday, and ran out convincing 3/2 winners over The Bushwhackers.
Overall,
the format was a great success and the course was challenging for
all levels of player. The competition would probably benefit from
being at a big course next year - roll on The Doubles 2002.
